2nd Annual Dedham Square College Fair & Block Party to draw
dozens of colleges from near and far
Again this year the Dedham Square Circle and the Dedham Youth Commission have teamed up to plan college fair like no other. The 2nd Annual Dedham Square College Fair & Block Party will be held on Sunday, October 5th from 1-3 pm. A section of High Street between Washington Street and Harris Street will be closed to traffic where dozens of colleges from New England and as far away as Tennessee will host informational tables. The event, sponsored by Dedham Savings Bank, is free and open to the public.
Rob Blaney, Director of the Dedham Youth Commission, came up with the idea for an alternative type of college fair last year. The inaugural event was held in November and attracted several hundred people. “Our goal is to create a fun and exciting atmosphere where kids of all ages have the opportunity to talk about college and their future with their parents and their peers,” said Blaney. “It’s never too early to start thinking about college,” he said.
Last year Dedham Square Circle (DSC) got involved with the event as a way to attract more people to the Square, said DSC Executive Director Amy Haelsen. “Many people were visiting the Square for the first time since the completion of the Dedham Square Improvement Project and were amazed at its transformation,” she said. “We hope even more visitors rediscover Dedham Square this year.”
The event will feature free raffles for college gear and apparel every ten minutes, a visit from the AMP 103.3 Street Team with giveaways and prizes, live music from “The Kapps”, an appearance from Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster, self-defense demos and a healthy-eating workshop, “The Price is Right” college edition – live, and face-painting and arts and craft activities for younger kids. Whole Foods Market Dedham will be on hand with refreshments and giveaways as will representatives from Dedham Savings.
Free parking is available throughout the Square the day of the event including all on-street spaces, the town lot on Eastern Avenue and town hall parking lot on Bryant Street. For more information and a list of participating colleges go to www.VisitDedhamSquare.com/collegefair.
