Where in the Square do you work?
It depends on what activity I'm engaged in. When I'm working with one of my art students you can find me at Paradise Cafe. If I'm creating one of my comic strips, “The Box Office” or “Contentment,” then Mocha Java is my spot. Come to think of it, I might be over-caffeinated. I also have a small art studio where I work on assorted other projects.
In 5 sentences or less, tell us about yourself
I was born and raised in Dedham. I attended the old Dexter Grade School back in the 70's (Art Teacher: Mrs. Flynn), and the old Junior High (Art Teacher: the sensitive Miss Butler). I graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School in 1987 and lived outside of Dedham for many years. Then, one day, I came back.
How did you end up in this line of work?
Pure luck and persistence. I have been drawing for most of my life, but to succeed as an artist you have to really throw yourself into it, even if no one is looking. This can be harder than it sounds. I had generated hundreds of comic strips before I arrived at my current situation. A situation that is still changing and growing as I strive for syndication. Often times an artist needs encouragement, and that’s what led to my teaching.
What you most like and least like about your work?
What I like the most is the freedom to be creative and have my work defined by that creativity. It’s like saying "The limit is there is NO limit." What do I like least? Hmm. Watercolors? It may seem cliché, but there really isn't anything I DON'T like about drawing.
What do you like most about Dedham Square?
I like the familiarity of the Square. Many businesses have changed over the years, but structurally it feels the same as it did when I was a boy. The same old sidewalks. I'm the type of person who enjoys the fact that I've been eating Dedham House of Pizza, pizza for my entire life, or that the first D'Angelos was located here (I've been known to brag about that to out-of-towners).
